Before self-care became a buzz word, it seemed like something out of reach to me, an average kinda girl.

Before it became a thing, self-care was a lofty, luxurious goal in my mind.

Spa massages, facials, mani/pedis, solo trips to chic locales.

Yeah, I wish.

For some people, this is their self-care. And that’s totally fine. And amazing. And something I wish I could have for myself but let’s be honest. I could never afford the time or more importantly, the money to do the same.

Several months ago, I was listening to a Happy Black Woman podcast & one of the points made was that often we think of self-care as some grandiose event.

However, self-care doesn’t have to be any of those things. It doesn’t have to be time consuming. It doesn’t have to be expensive. It doesn’t even have to be glamorous.

Over time, I’ve realized that self-care can be anything you want & need it to be.

It can be very simple

Self-care can be as simple as locking yourself in the bathroom & taking a 15 minute shower by yourself. Wanna kick it up a notch? Take a bath instead. Do you need some fancy Lush bath bomb or organic Dead Sea salts straight from the Mediterranean coast? No. Girl, go get you some Epsom salt from the Walmart down the street and live your best life in that warm, magnesium-fied bath water.

Maybe self-care is even a designated time to catch up on that last magazine you received in the mail that’s been collecting dust on the table (🙋🏾‍♀️ #guilty).

Heck, your self-care could manifest in the form of a full 8 hours of sleep.

It can be ANYTHING that restores you & makes you happy & feel somewhat like yourself again.

Take these ideas and make them your own

Here are a few ideas to get you going on your own self-care discovery. Remember, use these as a guide, not as the ultimate self-care say so.

  • go for a walk outside
  • open the blinds to let the sunlight radiate throughout your entire body
  • enjoy that last piece of cake or chocolate by yourself (or bag of Doritos if you’re more of a savory kinda gal)
  • meditation (here’s a great FREE app for both Android & IOS that I’ve been loving)
  • spend quality time with people who build you up
  • listen to a podcast
  • flip on that ‘Do Not Disturb’ feature on your phone because at this point you’re tired of everyone’s shit (Facebook & IG notifications included)
  • earthing (which I recently discovered was an actual thing)

Make your self-care a priority

Once you’ve determined how to #treatyoself, make time to get it done. Let’s be real. If you don’t make an intentional, focused effort to make the time for yourself, you’ll always do it as an afterthought. And think about it, how seriously do we take anything we consider as an afterthought? It’s kinda like sloppy seconds, IMHO.

No excuses. Start today. Right now. This very moment.

Try self-care on for size. You’ll be amazed at how well it fits you.

Self-care has become a trendy, wellness buzzword. And for good reason. It's critical for all of us to pour into ourselves as often as we can. However, that doesn't have to mean scheduled spa days & lavish trips (though it can be). It's time to rethink what self-care means to you.
